Matthew Joss is a shareholder of the firm and maintains a comprehensive civil litigation practice, with extensive experience defending physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers against medical malpractice claims. He has prepared and tried cases in courts across Virginia, and has secured numerous defense verdicts for his clients, earning a reputation for thorough preparation, effective advocacy, and sound litigation strategy. He has represented health care professionals including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners across virtually all specialties, as well as skilled nursing facilities and rehabilitation centers and their staff members.
In addition to his work in healthcare defense, Matthew represents corporate clients in personal injury, toxic tort, and product liability matters in both state and federal courts. He is frequently called upon to travel nationwide to take depositions and conduct videotaped trial cross-examinations of terminally ill plaintiffs in high-stakes, multimillion-dollar lawsuits. Matthew has deposed hundreds of expert witnesses, including pathologists, occupational medicine specialists, industrial hygienists, and epidemiologists.
Matthew’s litigation skills extend beyond jury trials to briefing and arguing motions for summary judgment, motions to dismiss, and motions to exclude opposing experts. He has successfully resolved cases through mediation before private mediators and federal magistrate judges. He also has many years of experience defending licensees in administrative proceedings before the Virginia Board of Medicine and Board of Nursing, as well as peer review and other private credentialing bodies.
